Compliance & Quality Assurance Audit

A Comprehensive Approach

Conducting an internal compliance audit on your RTO operations will give you a clear picture of your current state of compliance against the standards for RTOs. These internal audits are conducted to reflect ASQA’s student-centred approach to performance assessment and are a great way to prepare for re-registration of your RTO.

Your assigned compliance consultant and team will conduct a comprehensive internal audit to assess the RTO's compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements and provide you with a detailed report

What does a CWTS Compliance & Quality Assurance Audit cover?

A CWTS Compliance and Quality Assurance Audit is a comprehensive review of your RTO's operations against the Standards for RTOs 2025. It covers governance and management arrangements, trainer and assessor competency and currency, Training and Assessment Strategy quality, assessment design and evidence collection practice, student records and certification documentation, AVETMISS data integrity, third-party arrangement management, student support obligations, complaints and appeals processes, and your RTO's self-assurance and continuous improvement systems. The audit produces a detailed findings report with prioritised corrective action recommendations aligned to the specific clauses of the Standards for RTOs 2025.

What is the difference between a CWTS compliance audit and an ASQA audit?

A CWTS Compliance and Quality Assurance Audit is an independent internal audit conducted by CWTS consultants on behalf of your RTO. Its purpose is to identify compliance gaps and rectify them before your RTO interacts with ASQA. An ASQA audit is a regulatory performance assessment conducted by ASQA itself, which can result in formal findings, conditions on registration, or in serious cases, cancellation of registration. Engaging CWTS to conduct an internal audit before an ASQA interaction gives your RTO the opportunity to identify and address gaps in a controlled environment, with expert guidance on the corrective actions required.

What is the difference between a CWTS compliance audit and an ASQA audit?

The duration of a CWTS compliance audit depends on the size and complexity of your RTO. For small RTOs with up to 100 students, a single campus, and a limited scope of registration, the audit process takes approximately one to two weeks. Medium-sized RTOs with 101 to 500 students typically require two to four weeks. Large or complex RTOs with 500 or more students, multiple campuses, or scope across multiple industry areas should allow four to eight weeks or more. These timeframes include the document review, evidence assessment, findings analysis, and delivery of the written audit report.

What does the audit report include and what happens after it is delivered?

The CWTS audit report documents findings against each relevant clause of the Standards for RTOs 2025, identifies areas of non-conformance and areas of risk, and provides prioritised corrective action recommendations for each finding. Following delivery of the report, CWTS recommends pairing the audit with an RTO Compliance Support Package to ensure that findings are addressed systematically, corrective actions are implemented correctly, and your RTO's compliance position is strengthened before any regulatory interaction. An audit without a structured rectification plan leaves the work half done.

How do I know if my RTO needs a compliance audit?

Your RTO should consider a compliance audit if it has not conducted a formal internal review against the Standards for RTOs 2025 in the last twelve months, if it is approaching a registration renewal or anticipating an ASQA performance assessment, if it has received complaints or audit findings previously and wants to confirm rectification is complete, if it has recently undergone significant operational changes such as new staff, new training products, or new third-party arrangements, or if its leadership team cannot confidently demonstrate active oversight of compliance risk across all areas of its operation. The Standards for RTOs 2025 place explicit obligations on RTOs to monitor their own compliance continuously, and a formal audit is the most reliable way to verify that obligation is being met.
