Trainer Assessor Competency Policy Pack

Trainer Assessor Competency Policy Pack

The quality of your RTO's training and assessment services depends directly on the people delivering them. Trainers and assessors are not simply facilitators. They are the professional face of your RTO, the primary point of contact for your students, and the individuals whose qualifications, currency, and practice are scrutinised most closely when ASQA comes to audit.

The Standards for RTOs 2025 set detailed and specific requirements for trainer and assessor competency. Every person delivering training or conducting assessment must hold the appropriate vocational qualifications for the units they teach, demonstrate current industry skills relevant to the training they deliver, and meet the TAE qualification requirements applicable to their role. These are not requirements that can be approximated or managed informally. ASQA expects documentary evidence that each trainer and assessor meets the full standard, and that your RTO has assessed and recorded that evidence systematically.

Trainer and assessor compliance is also not static. Industry currency must be maintained and evidenced on an ongoing basis. Professional development obligations must be planned, recorded, and reviewed. Where a trainer or assessor does not yet fully meet the requirements, supervision arrangements must be documented, structured, and genuinely applied. Gaps that are managed through informal understanding rather than documented process are gaps that will appear in an audit finding.

The risk of getting this wrong extends beyond a non-conformance notice. Trainers and assessors who do not meet the Standards are delivering training and assessment that may not be legally valid. The qualifications your students receive as a result of that delivery carry the same risk. For an RTO, that is a reputational and regulatory exposure that is difficult and costly to recover from.

This policy pack gives your RTO the documented framework to assess, record, monitor, and maintain trainer and assessor competency consistently across your organisation. When implemented, it supports compliance with clauses 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 of the Standards for RTOs 2025, as well as the associated Compliance Requirements. It includes the policies, procedures, forms, and templates your team needs to manage trainer and assessor compliance in a structured, auditable, and defensible way.

All documents are fully editable and rebrand-ready. Add your RTO logo, colours, and details and your policy is ready to implement.
