Validation of Assessment Policy Pack

Validation of Assessment Policy Pack

Validation is one of the most technically demanding compliance obligations your RTO carries, and one of the most commonly misunderstood. It is not a moderation exercise, and it is not simply a review of whether assessors are marking consistently. Validation is a systematic quality review of your entire assessment system, conducted both before assessment tools are used with students and after assessment judgements have been made. Its purpose is to confirm that your assessment tools are fit for purpose, that the evidence being collected genuinely reflects the requirements of the unit of competency, and that the judgements your assessors are making are valid, reliable, and defensible.

The Standards for RTOs 2025 set specific requirements for how validation must be conducted, by whom, on what schedule, and with what level of documented outcome. Your validation schedule must cover all units on your scope across a five-year cycle, with higher-risk units prioritised for more frequent review. Validators must have the required vocational competency and assessment expertise to make credible judgements about the tools and evidence they are reviewing. And the outcomes of every validation activity must be documented, fed back into your continuous improvement process, and acted on in a way that is traceable and auditable.

Pre-assessment validation and post-assessment validation serve different but equally important functions. Pre-assessment validation protects your RTO by confirming that tools are compliant before they are used. Post-assessment validation confirms that your assessors are applying those tools correctly and that the judgements being made across your cohort are consistent. This policy pack gives your RTO the documented framework to plan, conduct, and record both forms of validation consistently. When implemented, it supports compliance with clauses 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, and 4.4 of the Standards for RTOs 2025, as well as the associated Compliance Requirements. It includes the policies, procedures, forms, and templates your team needs to build and maintain a validation system that satisfies ASQA's expectations.
